The Biblical Root of Shame – Genesis to Jesus
Shame first appears in Genesis 3. After Adam and Eve sinned:
They hid from the presence of the Lord. — Genesis 3:8
Shame always makes you hide. But what did God do? He went looking for them, not to punish them, but to restore them. From the beginning, God’s heart has been restoration and not condemnation. Then Jesus fulfilled this completely:
There is therefore now NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.
— Romans 8:1
If God says no condemnation, shame has no legal right to remain in your life.
Why the Enemy Attacks Your Identity
Satan attacks your identity because:
1. Identity determines behavior.
When you know who you are, you act differently.
2. Identity determines authority.
When you know who you are in Christ, you realize your authority. The enemy knows a believer who knows their position is a threat.
3. Identity determines destiny.
If the enemy can’t steal your salvation, he tries to steal your confidence.
4. Identity is the foundation of spiritual warfare.
Jesus overcame temptation because He was confident in His identity (Matthew 4:3-4). You can’t win spiritual battles if you don’t believe what God says about you.
